The Royal Borough of Greenwich temporarily changed its name to GreenWitch last Tuesday, in celebration of the Wicked movie release.
As a marketing stunt and in celebration of the upcoming Wicked movie, Greenwich changed its name to GreenWitch, undergoing a wicked makeover.
Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Jit Ranabhat, launched the new name by unveiling a plaque on the Greenwich Foot Tunnel.
Following a countdown by the crowd, Ranabhat cut the emerald ribbon and welcomed citizens by declaring: “Now we have become the Royal Borough of GreenWitch.”
Throughout the Borough, key spots embarked on the makeover, including the University of GreenWitch, the GreenWitch Picture House and the Greenwich Tourist Information Centre.
Dedicated installations, like the themed roof at the GreenWitch Market, were set up. Street signs also joined in the makeover fun undergoing a green rebrand.
Noting the income generated from this partnership, Ranabhat added how it will “fund our hugely popular free, festive light trail, Sparkle in the Park for 2024.”

Greenwich-based broadcaster and film critic Ashanti Omkar shared her delight: “It’s wonderful to see my part of London captured in this way, to celebrate the much anticipated Wicked movie. With this casting and the talent on display in this film, it is bound to be an absolute spectacle on the big screen.”
With other areas of London joining in on the stunt, Omkar added: “It’s very clever marketing to create this art in Greenwich to celebrate the release, just like the Wicked Christmas Tree in King’s Cross.”
Fans and visitors can use the dedicated map and follow the trail to spot the signs, installations and other themed elements.
The GreenWitch takeover will run for a limited time until Sunday, around the time Wicked is set to release into theatres across the UK.
